A humpback whale that washed up onto a reef in Struisbaai has been euthanised.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)’s Craig Lambinon says the nine metre whale was euthanised by the police explosives unit yesterday afternoon after it was found to be ill with little chance of survival.

It had washed up onto a reef near Struisbaai harbour earlier in the day.

Lambinon said a municipal cleaning team will remove the carcass.
